PIKE COUNTY, Ohio — An 18-year-old Piketon man was arrested early Sunday, Nov. 1, after Pike County deputies and Waverly police pursued him at speeds the sheriff’s office said exceeded 120 mph, according to a Pike County Sheriff’s Office media release posted Tuesday, Nov. 3.
Deputies said they and Waverly Police Department officers pursued Jace Lawson, 18, of Piketon, at about 1:42 a.m. Nov. 1 for dangerous driving and excessive speed — 84 mph in a 50 mph zone on U.S. 23, according to the release.
The pursuit continued onto State Route 32 westbound, where speeds exceeded 120 mph, the sheriff’s office said.
Lawson then pulled his vehicle, a black 2012 Honda Accord, to the side of the road near Meade Road, according to the release. As a deputy was getting out of his cruiser and approaching Lawson’s vehicle, Lawson accelerated and took off again, deputies said. While fleeing further, Lawson attempted to strike one of the Waverly cruisers with his own vehicle, according to the release.
Lawson was finally apprehended in Pike County near the rest area, the sheriff’s office said. Deputies said he was found to be under the influence of alcohol and was taken into custody without further incident. He was transported to Adena Pike Emergency Room, where he was medically cleared for incarceration, according to the release.
Lawson was charged with failure to comply (Ohio Revised Code 2921.331(B)), speeding — 84 mph in a 50 mph zone (ORC 4511.21) — and operating a vehicle under the influence (ORC 4511.19), the sheriff’s office said.
Charges are allegations and do not indicate guilt.
