PJM forecasts 72,000 MW in generation outages ahead of Monday capacity advisory

PJM Interconnection has issued a capacity advisory for Monday, Oct. 19, and says it now expects roughly 72,000 megawatts of generation outages that day against forecast demand of 94,573 megawatts, with planned transmission outages adding to the strain.

The grid operator, which runs the electric system for Ohio and all or parts of 12 other states and the District of Columbia, published the figures in an operations update Friday afternoon. A capacity advisory is a formal heads-up to generators and utilities that supplies could tighten — it is not an emergency declaration, and PJM had no emergency procedures in effect Friday.

PJM said the 72,000-megawatt figure is a forecast for Monday, not a count of plants offline today, and cautioned against comparing it directly with the roughly 61,000 megawatts unavailable during this week’s earlier grid emergency because the timing and reporting differ.

The system ran hot even on Friday. PJM’s dashboard showed actual demand of 97,927 megawatts at 4:51 p.m., above the day’s forecast peak of 97,336 megawatts. Saturday’s forecast peak is lower, at 86,612 megawatts. PJM identified no new Energy Emergency Alert 2 or 3 and no Ohio load-shedding directive.

Separately, PJM posted a post-contingency local load relief warning at 2:10 p.m. Friday — Emergency Message 105576 — involving the GAINESVL–RAILRDDP transmission facility in Dominion Energy’s Virginia service territory, saying no generation or switching solution was available. The message is a warning about a specific facility outside Ohio; it is not an Ohio directive and not a report that any customers lost power.

Federal questions also remain open heading into the weekend. U.S. Department of Energy Emergency Order 202-26-50 is scheduled to expire Friday night, and the federal docket shows no posted extension and no daily reliance report confirming whether Ohio’s FE Lemoyne generating units operated under the environmental waiver. The absence of a posted report does not by itself establish that the units never ran under the order.
