Ohio State Highway Patrol announces off-duty death of Mansfield Post sergeant

MANSFIELD, Ohio — An off-duty sergeant with the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Mansfield post died Thursday after a traffic crash, the patrol announced Friday.

Sgt. Tyler Carr was off duty when the crash occurred, the patrol said. Officials released no further details about the crash, including where it happened.

Carr joined the patrol in December 2004 as a member of the 143rd academy class and earned his commission the following June, according to the patrol. He served as a trooper at the Bucyrus, Ashland, and Mansfield posts before transferring from Bucyrus district criminal investigations to serve as an assistant post commander at the Mansfield post when he was promoted to sergeant in November 2020.

He earned the Ace Award for excellence in auto larceny enforcement in 2012 and the District Trooper Recognition Award in 2018.

The Mansfield Police Department extended condolences to Carr’s family, the troopers at the Mansfield post and Bucyrus district, and the patrol as a whole.
