ATHENS, Ohio — The city of Athens will discontinue the police department’s Flock camera system, Mayor Steve Patterson announced at Monday’s city council meeting.
Patterson read a statement outlining the police department’s review of the system — its value as an investigative tool and the public concerns surrounding its use. Following that review, Police Chief Nick Magruder and department leadership recommended ending the agreement.
“The city of Athens has chosen to discontinue its Flock system agreement following community discussions and ongoing public concerns regarding the use of the system,” Patterson said.
Magruder said the technology aided officers in solving crimes but that its law enforcement value “was limited in relation to its potential detriment.”
Patterson said he supports the department’s recommendation and that funding for the Flock system will not be included in the upcoming budget. The department’s current contract expires in February 2027.
The decision does not affect the Athens County Sheriff’s Office, which uses Flock cameras under a separate county-level contract.
