LUCASVILLE, Ohio — A 49-year-old Huntington, West Virginia, man and a 31-year-old South Point, Ohio, woman face felony drug charges after the Ohio State Highway Patrol seized more than 5,700 grams of suspected crack cocaine during a traffic stop Sunday, according to a news release from the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office and the Portsmouth Police Department.
The arrests followed an investigation by the Southern Ohio Drug Task Force in coordination with the Highway Patrol, the release states.
Troopers stopped a vehicle for traffic violations at about 6:26 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, near mile marker 9 on Ohio 823 in Lucasville, according to the release. During the stop, troopers seized about 5,746 grams of suspected crack cocaine, which authorities estimated had a street value of $574,600.
Each person was charged with one count of trafficking in drugs and one count of possession of drugs, both first-degree felonies, according to the release. Both were booked into the Scioto County Jail and were scheduled to be arraigned at 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5, in Portsmouth Municipal Court.
The case will be forwarded to the Scioto County Prosecutor’s Office for presentation to a Scioto County grand jury, which will consider additional felony charges, the release states.
