No deputies were injured; suspect hospitalized after shooting during warrant service
LAURELVILLE, Ohio — A person wanted on a felonious assault charge was hospitalized Thursday after exchanging gunfire with Hocking County sheriff’s deputies who were attempting to serve an arrest warrant, authorities said.
Deputies with the Hocking County Sheriff’s Office went to a residence on state Route 180 near Laurelville at approximately 9:33 a.m. Oct. 2 to arrest the individual, according to Hocking County Sheriff Lanny E. North.
Deputies attempted to make contact with the person and repeatedly ordered the individual to come to the door, North said. The commands went unanswered, although deputies observed vehicles belonging to the individual in the driveway.
Deputies then entered the residence.
Once inside, the individual came out of a room and began firing a weapon at deputies, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies returned fire, striking the individual.
No deputies were injured.
Deputies provided first aid until emergency medical personnel arrived. The individual was taken to a hospital for treatment. Authorities did not immediately release the person’s name or provide details about the severity of the injuries.
Agents with the Ohio Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to the scene and are investigating the officer-involved shooting.
Authorities said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information is expected to be released as it becomes available.
