CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio — The superintendent of the Pickaway County Board of Developmental Disabilities resigned this week after an outside law firm completed an independent investigation into anonymous allegations made against her, the board announced Tuesday, according to Total Media.
Marie Wilbanks submitted her resignation August 3, according to a statement from the board. She had served as superintendent since January 2024, succeeding longtime superintendent Mike Pelcic following his retirement on December 31, 2023.
The board placed Wilbanks on paid administrative leave May 18 following a special meeting called to address anonymous allegations it had received. Officials said the board retained an outside law firm to conduct the investigation independently.
The board was careful to note the scope of the allegations. The complaints did not involve the safety or well-being of individuals with developmental disabilities served by the county, nor did they involve county board employees, officials said. The allegations primarily concerned matters outside the direct scope of official board operations.
The law firm presented its findings to board members. Wilbanks subsequently submitted her resignation.
The board appointed Susan Thompson as interim superintendent May 21 to maintain continuity of leadership and services. Thompson also serves as superintendent of the Madison County Board of Developmental Disabilities and has agreed to remain in the interim role through September while the board conducts a permanent search.
Wilbanks had spent more than 17 years with Pickaway DD before becoming superintendent, including 12 years as Director of Service and Support Administration, Medicaid and Compliance.
The board said services to individuals and families will continue without interruption
